Teams at Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT), work in an environment that is both deeply meaningful and emotionally demanding.
From guiding grieving families through difficult decisions to maintaining the serenity of our memorial spaces, employees are regularly exposed to trauma, loss, and high emotional intensity.
Recognising the need for proactive support, SMCT partnered with FBG Group.
Together, they implemented a comprehensive, evidence-based mental health service designed to support employees through education, early intervention, and ongoing care.
The service includes tailored workshops, facilitated by qualified professionals, that focus on understanding trauma, building resilience, and developing practical strategies for self-care.
Sessions are inclusive, bringing together staff from various departments to foster empathy and shared understanding.
“Vicarious trauma means trauma experienced by somebody else. So helping people in the organisation understand what it is and how to put steps in for self-care is key,” says Louise, Head of Consulting, from FBG.
“We advise the organisation on how to minimise the impact of trauma and create a safe working environment.”
The service has also contributed to improved team dynamics, reduced absenteeism, and enhanced morale across the organisation.
By prioritising mental health, SMCT has cultivated a culture of care and resilience—one where employees feel safe, valued, and empowered.
A healthier, more supported workforce leads to better service delivery, stronger team collaboration, and a more sustainable organisation.
The partnership with FBG has enabled SMCT to embed mental health into its operational strategy, aligning with their values of compassion, integrity, and excellence.
As Rhiannon notes, “SMCT has a fantastic relationship with FBG. They’ve been really supportive of us and our progress throughout the psychosocial journey.”
By investing in mental health, SMCT is not only supporting its people, but also strengthening its mission to serve the community with empathy and professionalism.
